Femslash fragment: Shades of grey

If you asked Willow whether she regreted any of her more recent choices, she would say no. How could she regret saving the planet? She's remade the world twice now and it's a better place for it. Everyone says so.

Illyria is in the shower, washing the blood from her hair. Willow's not sure what color the blood was today. If it's more than one kind then it tends to all run together into an icky dark grey. So while she'd like to go and watch her lover through the glass, she'll wait until her girl is clean.

And there's no time to get distracted. She can hear voices through the hotel wall, Ilona's pealing laugh. "Oh, no, no, no!" the Italian says and Willow can just imagine Buffy's bored expression as she waits it out. Because any moment now Ilona will back down and do whatever Buffy has asked. Ilona always likes to be on the winning
side.

Illyria steps out of the bathroom, wrapped in a huge towel. She's brown-haired and brown-eyed at that moment, the black-inked tattoos curling up just above her breasts. She sneaks a kiss from her love with a smile. Her touch always makes Willow's skin hum with power, the magical and the demonic both.

Hmm, this definitely counts as an unusual and very unexpected pairing. And I find the impact of the sheer unexpectedness of it very powerful. (And as such I think it taps into the very essence of fanfic - you couldn't possibly achieve this effect in any other genre.)
