indriDesperate Remedies (New Zealand, 1993). High-camp, grand guignol, overly-technicolour melodrama with period frocks. The strong-willed Dorothea considers a marriage that will consolidate her business interests, but lusts after the handsome nobody she has arranged to marry her pregnant, drug-addicted sister. Set against a background of war in nineteenth-century New Zealand, this has to be seen to be believed. Includes a Prince look-alike, partial nudity and the wilful misuse of tartan.
