Can anyone provide advice as to how these work or how you get them to work? I've been googling but am a bit fazed by all the semi-commerical websites. I'd just like to know how many people are visiting Blood and Weetabix.

I don't trust hit counters. I've seen them click over each time I returned to the main page after reading a story, or a chapter. So my one visit to a site would get recorded as 20 or 30 hits. My own site provides comprehensive statistics through Awstats, and it shows (for example) 771 unique visitors so far in July, making 1372 visits, reading 5355 pages, but clocking up 7527 hits. And it differentiates between people and bots.

Awstats http://awstats.sourceforge.net/ is a free realtime logfile analyzer - my web host includes it but you can just download it and it is supposed to work with any site. It's a lot of fun; I not only know how many visitors I'm getting but where they are from, what link led them to me, and what stories are being read most. Should enable you to tell whether you're being visited by BtVS fanfic fans or by naturalists specialising in the weetabix-eating lemurs of Madagascar.

My favorite is Andale.com because they're freeeeee!

Sometimes you have to search around to find the free counters, but they are there, and all you have to do is put the image link on your site like you would any other image.

Kisses!
