First thoughts on "Hole in the World"

1. Am I the only person who mostly hated it with, say, the passion of at least half a dozen suns? Thought it was clunky with some excruciatingly bad dialogue and wearying sexual politics, not to mention naff direction?

2. I kept thinking that at some point we'd learn that one side-effect of whatever was afflicting Fred was that male people near her suddenly turned into brainless macho over-protective cavemen. Really, I did think this. Wesley shooting someone, Lorne hitting Eve---I was certain. But I was wrong. I forgot, for example, that Wes is, along with many positive qualities, a complete head-case.

3. The caveman and astronaut joke reminds me of the week when all my colleagues down at the lab were arguing over what is the opposite of a turtle.

4. My story, the one I've spent a year on and which has just gone through its second beta, was jossed. Not that I'm bitter.

5. The Angel/Spike snarkage is still fun, but may explain why the show has been cancelled: the anti gay rights lobby is behind it. I blame Bush and maybe Haliburton.

6. So, the only living female character on the show is now Eve. Argh.

7. See 6. Argh.

8. Why would you name your cuddly toy after Mitchell Feigenbaum? I know they just wanted to make some sort of reference to chaos theory, I'm just wondering about Fred.

Lilah would be rolling in her grave if she didn't have many better things to do.

Maybe it will grow on me. Maybe I'll grow a new head.

Bah, humbug.

1. I didn't exactly hate it. More like I was detached. It was very unsubtle, the jossian tricks were much too opaque to be effective.

2. The episode made me think that AtS is somekind of reversed polarised BtVS. The former testosterone-heavy, the latter estrogene-packed.

5. During my second viewing of the episode, I caught myself fast forwarding to the A/S scenes. How pathetic is that?

7. And Nina, the werewolf/Darla/Buffy clone who's having breakfast with Angel offscreen.

8. I think I get now why a lot of fans see Fred as the ultimate Mary Sue in the jossverse. See Fred, see how her brain is big enough for chaos theory, see how all the men want to date her, see how all the women gossip about her love life. Fred is dead. Goodbye, Fred. Hello, Fred-shaped blue fairy from hell.

It was just so clumsy in many places. My hate is largely due to a conviction that ME should better than this, especially if they've only got a few episodes to go :(

Whereas I keep wondering what sort of nutrition and health care the cavemen had :)

I don't usually think of her as a Mary Sue unless she's performing autopsies. But she was one in that ep.
