So, on with the Arc...

What we learnt in this episode:

(i) Angel's feeling a bit insecure and needs to find a sense of validation outside of prophecy and his silly hero fixation (I know he's tried, though, and it keeps going horribly wrong).

(ii) Spike's a bit bored and can't think of anything much to do now that he's taking a break from chasing slayers.

(iii) Lindsey is sneaky.

(iv) Eve is up to something.

(v) Wesley and Gunn don't need (or don't think they need) Angel to run W&H.

(vi) Harmony knows how to pronounce "Machiavelli". See, she did read up on her evil geniuses. You show 'em, Harm.

(vii) Both Angel and Fred pay a surprising amount of attention to people's earrings. All a bit Nancy Drew, really.

So, not much new there. But what we are getting is an idea of how the above points might play out. Lindsey wants to fool the PtB that Spike and not Angel is key---why? Does this mean that he's convinced of Angel's cosmic importance? Spike's pretending to be a caped crusader but isn't looking very comfortable or happy about it---I doubt whether that will last for long, at least with Doyle Lindsey as his handler. And doesn't Lindsey know that Spike habitually messes up everyone's plans, including his own? Or is Lindsey merely collecting the set as part of his Fanged Four obsession? It's all carefully stage-managed so that Angel's nightmare---of Spike saving the day---is exactly the nightmare he wakes to.

Execution

Sadly, the execution of this episode often lacked the lightness of touch of "Harm's Way". The exposition in the stripper joint was appallingly stilted. Ugh!

Other parts were better done. Orbital laser cannons. Angel's short tie when he's dressed as the mailboy. The fiery background of the apocalypse. The sound of Angel's walnut heart hitting the basin during Fred's dissection. Great comic delivery from Spike ("I'm soft on the inside") and Gunn (when he's apologising to Angel for his dream self' heckling). It just started to feel belaboured after a while.

Random observations

Spike gets fancy slo-mo now he's a champion, I see. I hope he appreciates it. (I do share his annoyance at the number of foolish people wandering around dark, vampire-infested alleys, though.)

One thing I wonder, just how long would Angel have to be missing before anyone checked up on him?

Gunn grabbing Spike to listen to his heart post-Snowshoe: "I wanna hear it!"

Angel's asked to sing "Oh my darling Clementine." What is it that he feels has been "gone and lost forever" I wonder? His special destiny?

The presence of dream-Buffy and the absence of SMG made for a revealing moment: apparently Angel thinks of her as a blonde wig who wants to go to the prom.

Wes continues to scare me. Today it's a pre-emptive strike; tomorrow he'll be running for a safe seat in the House of Commons.

What I learnt because of this episode

(i) Crockett and Tubbs are the characters in Miami Vice.

(ii) Spike drinks Brodanan beer. Is this a real beverage? I couldn't google it.

(iii) Lindsey has a sexy voice. I had no idea, as I've only read the transcripts of his AtS seasons.

Harmony knows how to pronounce "Machiavelli". See, she did read up on her evil geniuses. You show 'em, Harm.

Isn;t the joke here that she _doesn't_ know? Gunn says something like, 'We're gonna open a can of Machiavelli on their asses' and Harmony, thinking he means the perfume (which I can't spell) says, 'It's Matchiabelli, dumbass, and it doesn't come in cans.'

At which point Gunn and Wes give her A Look.

Not at all! :;huggles:: But it's funnier this way, yes? :-)

To the best of my knowledge, it *is* pronounced with that hard k in Italian (and technically also in English). It's a shame the BtVS/AtS shooting scripts site is no longer up, because what people transcribe is sometimes different than what's in those. I took it the same way you did: Harm knew how to pronounce the word properly, and it took Gunn and Wes offguard to be corrected by someone they assumed was a bimbo.
