Squeee!

Episode 2

OK, that was much Spike. In particular, it seems to be Season 4 Spike, only tilted towards good instead of evil. This makes some sense, given that his S5-7 Buffy fixation has necessarily taken a backseat, on account of the lack of slayer.

[Surely someone should ring Buffy or Willow though. Europe's not Quartoth, for goodness' sake. Sure, Fred's science queen, but the strongest witch in whatever hemisphere might be able to be of more immediate help, unless she's still totally knackered after her spell in "Chosen". Which, I note, took place just 19 days before. So does that move BtVS's already dodgy S7 timeline into summer, or push AtS S5 back? I'm suspecting the latter, because the crew have only just taken over W&H, although I'm much less certain of AtS chronology.]

We had a reprise of parts of "The Yoko Factor" plot but with a different conclusion to emphasise the side Spike's now taking.

Much snark.

>>"Spike, I'm in a meeting."
>>"Oh I'm sorry. I didn't care."

And, of course,
>>"I'm his date."

Also, in the final scene, we have Spike's letting his guard down in typical fashion, i.e. to the nearest female with at least half a brain.

In short: so far, I'm pleased. Much snark, Angel's pretensions soundly mocked, silly necromancer plot that isn't the point at all, Gunn given something to do. And the underplayed humour of Angel and the wizard issuing IRS threats to each other was really enjoyable. Why, it's almost enough to make one want to read The Financial Review!

Episode 3

Rather lacklustre and heavy-handed this one, clearly reminiscent of "Beauty and the Beasts", another episode I'm not too fond of. As usual, the secondary plot is daft. I notice they take some care to explain that her lycanthropy is different from Oz's, so that we won't worry about the differences.

Why does Wes being jealous annoy me when Spike being jealous doesn't? Leave her alone, Wes! She doesn't fancy you. She has potential geeklove awaiting. Their eyes met across a crowded science lab...

Fred has a Mac TiBook. Of course she does. Mmm, titanium.

It occurs to me as that Lorne is AtS's Deanna Troi, only without the prominent cleavage. I hope they give him more to do than simply tell everyone to cheer up.

Epsiode 4

Despite the enhanced Spike quotient, this was pretty stupid really. The haunted ghost idea was OK, but as soon as the Reaper turns up it's the plot that goes to hell. Ah, the soft-voiced sadist cliche: fan-bloody-tastic. And may I express a certain weariness of gratuitous SpikeTorture?

The snark was good again though, especially that scene in Angel's office. But, I ask you, William let Angelus read his poetry? I await [livejournal.com profile] peasant_'s gloss on that.

Angel himself is much more bearable on his own show than on Buffy's, especially in the lighter moments of AtS. I only dislike him when (i) he thinks he is the centre of the universe and (ii) the universe agrees with him. Actually, it's mostly (ii) I abhor.

I've haven't watched much AtS before, although I've read all the transcripts for S1-4. Is S5 much lighter in tone? Previous seasons read as if they would be quite traumatic to watch, but perhaps I've missed the humour before because I had no sense of how each line is delivered.

Episode 5

Donna Summer! The perfect choice, unless the Jimmy Somerville version could be considered even more perfect.

Again, a thoroughly stupid plot (Hulk Lorne) made bearable by humour and fine performances. Has AtS had a Halloween ep before?

Angel/Eve---ugh. Spork time...

Can Wesley still be that much of a wet schoolboy underneath? I wouldn't have thought so, after Lilah, but who knows how events "changed" in the wake of Angel's deal with W&H?

I wonder when and how Connor, Cordelia and Lilah might be addressed.

You know, Season 4 Spike was fun, but he wasn't the character I started obsessing over. He hangs out in this ep much like he did in the frat house parties of S4. For the first time in ages I am able to watch eps with some semblance of rationality, rather than in shipperific agony. I'm enjoying watching it more but am much less engaged.

RE: ATS vs BTVS TIMELINE: AtS ep 1 picked up 19 days after Spike died on the Hellmouth. No idea the significance of that, except that in Judaism, 18 is the symbol for life everlasting. *G* I'm sure that's a coincidence.

Glad you're enjoying the show. As a fan of both, that's MY Spike back up there too. Snark. Balls. Slashy goodness with Angel. Yea.
