A couple of friends on my other list have pointed out Distraction: The Journal of Fanfiction Studies, a new scholarly publication. It's currently seeking papers for its inaugural issue. Submissions need to be received before 1st April 2005. Let's hope it's not an April Fool then.

Distraction is founded on the firm belief that fanfiction has significant value, both in its relationship to source materials and in its sociological, cultural, psychological, political and literary impact. We seek to publish critical essays on fanfiction for the education and enjoyment of fans and academics alike – and so that when society discovers fanfiction hiding in its corner, a solid grounding for its defense will already exist.

Everyone is encouraged to contribute; the emphasis here is on quality of work, not age or profession. Academic papers that evaluate and illuminate any aspect of fanfiction are welcome, although special emphasis will be placed on literary criticism.
