I do find it curious that fanfiction writers/readers are mostly women
Me too. My tentative theory (cribbed from others, natch) is that many women just find the undertones of mainstream narratives annoying and want to rewrite them. But this theory is weakened by the fact that much fanfic isn't so much revision as extension of the original. And surely a fair proportion of men should find these same narratives annoying too? But the only males on my Flist after a year are luddite_robot and speakr2customrs, who are vastly outnumbered by the women.
