The particular one I'm using tells you how many people visited your site on any given day or month since you installed the counter. It tries to measure how many of them are different people and how many (but not which) pages they've clicked through to. It doesn't count the better-known robots. It also gives some info about how they got there and what country they're from (if it can tell).

I haven't installed one before because I was afraid there would be very few hits and I'd get depressed.
